Delegates attend the ANZAC Dawn Service at Villers-Bretonneux
“On 24 April 1918 the Germans, in their advance towards Amiens, seized Villers-Bretonneux. That night, Australian soldiers counter-attacked to the north and south of the town and encircled it, and by the evening of 25 April—Anzac Day—the enemy had been driven out.”
An early morning for our delegates as we head to the Australian National Memorial for the annual ANZAC Dawn Service.
During early April of 1918, Australian forces helped defend Villers-Bretonneux from a German onslaught as part of the Spring Offensive, later leading the successful counter-attack on the Germans after the town's capture on April 25th.
The success happened to coincide with the third anniversary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli.
